Engulfing bars that never really engulf

Shallow covers and outside bars without follow-through — how to audit dual-bar reversal claims.

Textbook engulfing requires the second real body to cover the first completely. On live charts, traders often accept a partial overlap and still call the pattern — especially when the second bar is the colour they wanted.

Measure. If the second body leaves a meaningful portion of the prior body exposed, you are looking at a strong close, not an engulfing. That distinction matters for invalidation: a true engulfing failure often tags beyond the extreme of the two-bar structure; a shallow cover may simply mean momentum paused.

Follow-through is the second audit. An engulfing into the final minutes of a thin session can look heroic and then open the next day through the pattern’s extreme. In Evening Lab we mark homework that shows both the call and the next two bars — if those bars erase the story, the journal entry should say so without embarrassment.

Before your next dual-bar call, ask whether a sceptical partner could still see uncovered body. If yes, rename the observation and shrink the claim.
